The Next Internet Revolution

Image
Our Internet connected world is experiencing a revolution that is still in its early phases. New technologies, applications and online concepts are springing forth every day, changing the way we work with the net and how we connect and communicate with each other. Even though it is hard to predict what will happen next, the high rate of change and progress of Internet functions and applications indicates the Internet has not yet matured and will continue to develop and evolve in many interesting and powerful ways. One area of progress that is difficult to predict and that has been seriously lagging - seemingly just waiting in hiding to emerge and blossom - is the integration of the Internet with our physical world. Today's world of the Internet and our physical world are essentially two standalone worlds with humans functioning as the interface between the two. In the future, these two worlds will become significantly more intertwined, and this intertwining will become a sor...

Protecting Shopfloor Computers

Image
Computers, printers, monitors and LCD screens are as useful a tool for the shopfloor environment as they are in offices and the home. IT systems can save a fortune when production lines are automated and can increase efficiency and cut down dramatically on waste. Using computer technology on shopfloor environments does come with its problems, mainly due to the fact that most PC's, printers and monitors are designed to operate in home or office environments and not the dusty, greasy and wet confines of a factory or shopfloor. Industrial standard computers and industrial PCs are available for these types of areas but there are downsides to industrial PCs. Firstly, industrial PC systems are quite expensive. They are often designed to be solid state (no moving parts) which causes certain problems, primarily with upgrade and repair in that the units can only be refurbished by trained engineers . They quite often use outdated components too this is because they need to be as stab...

Image
People are loaded down with Desktop PCs, Notebooks, Laptops, Computer Monitors, Scanners, Printers, Digital Cameras, PDAs, Smartphones, Media Receivers and more. And new ones come out with newer features faster than you can wear out the old ones. So, how do you safely dispose of your old digital equipment without just throwing it in the trash. Of course, one of the most used options for disposing of your old digital equipment is to simply sell it at a discount to someone else. You may have a friend that would like to have the item or you may simply advertise in a local paper or online at Craigslist or eBay. You could give the item to a school, our troops, a small business , an animal shelter or drop it off at the local Salvation Army Thrift Store. And, as a last resort, you can just chunk it in the trash. But, before you do read on. One of the more popular ways today to dispose of your digital equipment is to recycle it ( Go Green). Human-Computer Interaction

Image
Imagine an architect who builds a house as per design principles. Also think about the different users he services . Each user has his own impressions of what he wants from a house. But due to marketing and sales promotion strategies the end product is thrust on the users. Similarly a computer is a human invention that is conditioned and worked on by computer engineers . The Internet is fashioned by a few people, but is used by so many others. For example why are there two backslashes in every URL we type? Why could it not be anything else such as a simple name? Why are we forced to sift through zillions of bytes of data every time we browse the Internet? Can the web become more personal, just to suit our own needs? The designers of such technology carry an enormous responsibility of not misleading the users. Another important issue that such inventions force us human beings to acquire skills that we do not require to possess. For example using the Internet requires special sk...

Gooooo Google

Image
One of the reasons Google has been so successful is that one of its core philosophies is efficiency. This standard of efficiency holds true in three areas: serving search results, processing products , and producing results. Google is also coming out with "Google Wave," which will help to make communication more efficient. Google is looking to redefine the foundation that the internet is run on. An open-source development program called Go was just released today. Google believes that this program will combine speed and performance and will reshape software and development in favor of Google. The program Go is based on one of the most popular language trees in the world, the C programming family. The difference between Go and other language programs is that Go combines the Python family with the Pascal/Modula/Oberon family in order to create faster and more dynamic programs. Google explains the motivation behind this program in its FAQ. Some of these reasons include: ...

Memory Lane

Image
Technology rules our lives. Ever look around today and you will observe every third or fourth person on a cell phone. We call, we text, we check our email on our Blackberry or I-phone or whatever clone you happen to have of those devices. Now I am aware that this shows my age, but does anyone remember rotary phones? My number was Twin brook 8; it was dialed as TW8 and then 4 digits. Sorry, I don't remember the 4 digits. Walk a little farther back down memory lane and you may have read about crank phones. Ok, this really shows my age. Growing up in rural Kansas, my first phone number was a long, short and a long. Mrs. Kempton was the local switchboard operator. It was considered courtesy to pick up the phone to be certain no one was speaking on the party line before you dialed. Dialing was turning the crank several times for a long and only once for a short. Everyone on the party line heard the ring and knew who was being called. Of course it was not polite to listen to someone...

Self Defense Products

Image
As the number of violent crimes continue to rise, more people are considering personal self defense products to add a level of security to their day-to-day lives. In response to this increased demand for such products manufacturers of self defense products have upped the production and currently sit atop a multi- billion dollar per year industry. While many people are eager to purchase these devices which provide various levels of self defense, there remains a more cynical sector of the population that asks, do these products really work? The answer to that question is two fold; yes the products work however only when used as intended and in the correct situation. Basically the products themselves are designed and tested to provide the time and opportunity to escape a potential attacker. Products such as pepper spray and tasers are so effective that law enforcement agencies as well as some military personnel carry them on their person. The key to finding the right personal s...

iPhone Wake on LAN

Image
That's right. Everything can be accomplished by an Ethernet computer networking standard that allows a computer to be turned on (or woken up) by a network message, that is called Wake-on-LAN, or in short, WoL. Since this is an Ethernet standard, it will ONLY work on your Ethernet card (no, it does not work on wireless cards attached to your PC).  The support for Wake-on-LAN is implemented on the motherboard of a computer and the network interface. It is not at all dependent on the Operating System you are running. So, tell me, does your motherboard - network card support WoL?? It's a pretty diffused standard, so your computer should very likely support it too. Enabling Wake on LAN capabilities To do this, you must enter into the computer BIOS . Usually, you just need to press F1, or F2, or Del keys right after you turn on your PC. If the Operating System starts to load, then you have lost your chance, and need to restart again! I have an IBM Netvista desktop computer, and for ...

The Google Power Meter

Image
No matter how eco-conscious or eco-oblivious a person may be, there comes a time when they have to stop and think about how much electricity they are using in their homes. Google has come up with a great way to help save electricity and money. From the ninety-eight year old refrigerator (give or take a decade) to the four computers that are currently running without a user in front of them, to the television that is one for the apparent amusement of the golden retriever, you know that a lot of electricity is not only being used, but being wasted as well. The hard, cold proof of that may be in your mailbox at this very second, looming like a poisonous spider, making you quiver in fear. When it comes to the point that the family is drawing straws to see who has to get the electric bill it is time for some major changes to come about. Most people will get the bill, freak out and vow that changes will be made. Those changes will be enforced for a week, maybe two and then old hab...

Computer Maintenance

Computer Repair Hawaii Computer Repair Services in Hawaii is not so much different than the mainland, particularly on the island of Oahu, but there are a few challenges. Having lived on Oahu over 45 years ago in Ewa Beach, and returning just over 7 years ago, the scene has changed drastically. Things were more rural back then, and of course there was no internet . In Oahu, people seem to work on one side of the island and work on the other. Since there are only 1 or 2 ways to get around, traffic can be extremely congested, and parking can be a challenge. So whether you are looking for a Computer Repair Shop to drop off your computer , or waiting for a Mobile Technician to drive out to you, timing can be a challenge. For some reason, even in Paradise, things can get pretty busy. With that said, I just wanted to put out my two-cents that affect both the customer and the service provider about computer repair in Oahu. Traffic Challenges If you live in Waianae, Waialua, Haliewa, or ...
